چکیده

We present a detection scheme for nanoscale particles based on the gradient force and torque near a tightly focused laser beam. The focus affects the path of nanoparticles passing by and a quadrant detector records the particle trajectory. A feedback system continuously adjusts the laser power and thereby prevents the particles from being trapped. Particle size and shape can be assessed by evaluating the time-trace of the quadrant detector signal.

Ultrastrong optical binding of metallic nanoparticles.

We demonstrate nanometer precision manipulation of multiple nanoparticles at room temperature. This is achieved using the optical binding force, which has been assumed to be weak compared to the optical gradient and scattering forces. We show that trapping by the optical binding force can be over 20 times stronger than by the gradient force and leads to ultrastable, rigid configurations of mult...

Fabrication of a material assembly of silver nanoparticles using the phase gradients of optical tweezers.

Optical matter can be created using the intensity gradient and electrodynamic (e.g., optical binding) forces that nano- and microparticles experience in focused optical beams. Here we show that the force associated with phase gradient is also important. In fact, in optical line traps the phase gradient force is crucial in determining the structure and stability of optical matter arrays consisti...

Guiding spatial arrangements of silver nanoparticles by optical binding interactions in shaped light fields.

We demonstrate assembly of spheroidal Ag nanoparticle clusters, chains and arrays induced by optical binding. Particles with diameters of 40 nm formed ordered clusters and chains in aqueous solution when illuminated by shaped optical fields with a wavelength of 800 nm; specifically, close-packed clusters were formed in cylindrically symmetric optical traps, and linear chains were formed in line...

Optical trapping and sensing with plasmonic dipole antennas

In this work, we study how to use a plasmonic dipole antenna as a multifunctional nanodevice for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) –based sensing and optical trapping. An analytical model is implemented to link the local electric field enhancement with the gradient forces, as well as the resonance shift caused by the presence of the analyte w...

Stable optical trapping and sensitive characterization of nanostructures using standing-wave Raman tweezers

Optical manipulation and label-free characterization of nanoscale structures open up new possibilities for assembly and control of nanodevices and biomolecules. Optical tweezers integrated with Raman spectroscopy allows analyzing a single trapped particle, but is generally less effective for individual nanoparticles. The main challenge is the weak gradient force on nanoparticles that is insuffi...
